Defect classification using severity and priority attributes is an important software quality practice for organizing defects based on technical impact and business urgency. In enterprise software projects, defects may differ in their effect on system functionality, data accuracy, security, performance, user operations, and release schedules. If severity and priority are not assigned correctly, teams may fix low-impact issues before critical failures, delay urgent corrections, misjudge release risk, and create confusion between testing, development, and project management teams. This article discusses how severity and priority attributes support structured defect analysis, correction planning, resource allocation, and release decision-making. It explains the role of defect impact assessment, business criticality, affected module, user impact, workaround availability, and release timeline in classifying defects effectively. The article also highlights common challenges such as inconsistent classification, stakeholder disagreement, unclear definitions, duplicate defects, and pressure to lower defect priority before release. A structured defect classification approach is presented to improve defect triage, strengthen communication, reduce correction delays, and support reliable software delivery. The study concludes that effective severity-priority classification improves defect management discipline, supports better quality control, and reduces operational risk in enterprise software projects.
