Requirement Traceability Management in Large-Scale Enterprise Software Projects

Requirement traceability management is essential for controlling requirement changes, artifact dependencies, validation coverage, and release risks in large-scale enterprise software projects. Enterprise systems contain interacting business workflows, application modules, database components, APIs, reports, and testing pipelines, making unmanaged requirement change a major source of rework and defect leakage. Literature on schema drift, modular dependency evaluation, ETL recovery, requirement volatility, and reporting systems shows that enterprise software failures often arise from weak links between requirements and technical artifacts. However, many traceability practices remain documentation-focused and provide limited support for continuous impact analysis, traceability quality checking, and lifecycle monitoring. This research presents a structured traceability management framework using requirement baselining, multi-layer traceability matrices, bidirectional change impact analysis, quality assessment, and periodic audits. The study concludes that traceability should function as an active project control mechanism to reduce rework, improve validation readiness, strengthen release confidence, and support reliable enterprise software delivery.
