Abstract

Documentation quality is important for effective software maintenance because developers depend on clear technical records to understand system behavior, design decisions, code logic, interfaces, dependencies, and change history. Poor or outdated documentation can increase maintenance effort, delay defect correction, create knowledge gaps, and make software modification risky, especially when original developers are no longer available. Traditional maintenance practices often focus on source code and defect reports, but they may overlook how incomplete requirement documents, weak design descriptions, missing API details, and unclear user manuals affect long-term maintainability. This article focuses on documentation quality and its effect on software maintenance by examining accuracy, completeness, consistency, readability, traceability, and update frequency of software documents. The study discusses how high-quality documentation can support faster impact analysis, easier onboarding, better testing decisions, and more reliable change implementation. The article concludes that strong documentation quality reduces maintenance complexity, improves developer productivity, preserves project knowledge, and supports sustainable software evolution.
