Abstract

Quality assurance practices are important in legacy software modernization because older systems often contain outdated architectures, undocumented logic, obsolete dependencies, fragile integrations, and business-critical functions that cannot fail during migration or replacement. Modernization activities such as code refactoring, database migration, API conversion, cloud deployment, interface redesign, and module replacement can introduce new defects if validation is not planned carefully. Traditional testing methods may not be sufficient because legacy systems usually have limited documentation, weak test coverage, and hidden dependencies. This article focuses on quality assurance practices in legacy software modernization by examining regression testing, compatibility checking, data validation, performance testing, security review, user acceptance testing, and continuous monitoring. The study discusses how structured QA can reduce migration risk, protect existing business behavior, and verify that modernized components remain functionally consistent with the original system. The article concludes that strong quality assurance practices are essential for reliable modernization, reduced operational disruption, improved maintainability, and long-term software sustainability.
