Abstract

Bug severity classification is important in manual defect management systems because software teams need to distinguish between minor issues, functional failures, major defects, and critical system-blocking problems. Manual defect handling often depends on tester judgment, developer interpretation, and project-specific priority rules, which can lead to inconsistent severity assignment and delayed resolution of high-impact bugs. Traditional defect logging may record bug descriptions, screenshots, modules, and reproduction steps, but it may not always provide a clear method for classifying technical impact. This article focuses on bug severity classification in manual defect management systems by examining defect symptoms, affected functionality, user impact, system failure level, reproducibility, business risk, and correction urgency. The study discusses how structured severity categories can improve defect triage, resource allocation, testing focus, and release decision-making. The article concludes that effective bug severity classification can reduce defect handling delays, improve communication between testers and developers, strengthen quality control, and support more reliable software delivery.
